The master bedroom wasn't Bruce's because it had been his parents' and Bruce had decided to leave it the way his parents had left it, sure Alfred cleaned it, but no one was allowed to sleep there.

So, Bruce was changing in his own room that wasn't as big as the master one but it suited him fine like the suit he was wearing in front of the mirror "I should be out there" Bruce said to Alfred for the nth time, the butler had lost count at the tenth "You are helping Gotham tonight, the citizens of Gotham and the city itself will profit from the money you'll raise with this charity event...you are still helping innocents, Bruce, even if you are not wearing a Batsuit" the wiser man replied while handing a tie that matched the tuxedo perfectly, after all Alfred had chosen the attire, he always did if it wasn't the Batsuit.

Bruce let out a sigh while taking the tie. He wasn't complaining about attending a charity event, damn, that was nothing to complain about, Bruce was well aware of his privileged status. The charity event wasn't the problem, attending it wasn't the problem either, but Bruce felt like he could be more useful patrolling. Batman wanted to have his night.

"The first guests will arrive soon, remember to show up a little bit late but not too much..." Bruce stopped the butler "I know Al, you taught me well, don't worry" Alfred nodded "Can't I even post a photo on Twitter? Nothing?" Alfred turned around rising a brow "I'll take that as a no" Bruce smiled when Alfred rolled his eyes after understanding that Bruce was just joking and teasing him.

The butler went down and ordered the waiters around to be sure that they would do their job properly. Music started and everything was ready when the firsts group of guests arrived. The first wave was already filling the ball room of Wayne Manor and even more guests would arrive soon. If the guests didn't want to dance in the ball room then they could go in the garden or to the rooms near the ballroom where food and champagne were served.

Bruce could see some of the guests in the garden from his window, but Bruce couldn't be seen from the garden. It wasn't time to show up yet.

It was a fine night in Gotham City, so of course Oswald Cobblepot was decked in his finest suit. Most of Gothams elites were attending the charity event tonight, and enjoying themselves. Oswald of course knew that in order to maintain many of his contacts and relationships, he ought to at least formally make a show of an appearance.

Many of the people he had formerly made deals with in the past were in attendance tonight as well. He had already met a few of them in fact. The Penguin had a friendly chat with Falcone and Maroni about ten minutes or so, their pleasantries tinged with the subtle hints and insinuations that men of their ilk used to converse when surrounded byliner man.

For now, Oswald was at the bar, ordering a a drink while leaning on his umbrella. He was people watching in a sense, his eyes flitting back and forth between the attendees. It remained to be seen if he would see anyone else he knew, but the night was still young. He intended to enjoy himself publicly, and conduct his business with discretion.

For now though, he was walking through the garden, admiring the way it was set up. Whoever had done this, knew what they were doing, he thought vaguely with slight admiration. He still had not had a chance to meet the host of the event tonight, however he planned to get around to it. The Penguin had unfinished business with him, as he might say.

"Bruce, before you go..." Alfred stood in front of the door that led into the ballroom, Bruce could hear music coming from there. He looked at Alfred rising a brow, he knew that tone too well "What's happening, Al?" Alfred let out a sigh, but a very elegant one "You see Sir...Falcone and Maroni are here" the Falcone leader had died a long time ago, but his son had taken his place.

Bruce clenched his fists and took a deep breath "I don't want them here, they are known to be mafia families so I have all the rights to throw them out" the only Wayne alive didn't want his family name to be associated with mafia families "Also...I saw Oswald Cobblepot talking to them" Bruce gave Alfred a look that meant: you're kidding right?!

Bruce let out an exasperated sigh "See? If I were patrolling right now then I wouldn't have to deal with all of this" Alfred patted Bruce's shoulder "What are you planning to do?" Bruce didn't say anything but Alfred understood anyway by his Master's look "Oh, well, then you'll make a memorable entrance" Alfred would have preferred a more diplomatic approach, but Bruce was stubborn and he secretly enjoyed making entrances.

Alfred opened the door and Bruce walked into the ballroom, a waiter walked by right away to give Mr. Wayne a glass of champagne. Then Bruce walked over to the little orchestra and people stopped dancing when the music stopped, they got confused for a moment but then turned their confusion in smiles when they saw Bruce Wayne standing on the orchestra's stage in his perfect tuxedo and glass of champagne that he raised up "Welcome! Thank you for coming, Gotham appreciates your help"

Everyone applauded but it faded away when Bruce kept talking "However...there are two guests who aren't welcomed to stay" honestly Bruce didn't want to deal with Oswald either, but the Cobblepots weren't part of the mafia "These guests don't help Gotham, they actually make everything worse" Falcone and Maroni, who were standing beside each other, looked at one another "Mr. Falcone and his friend Mr. Maroni, I'm asking you kindly to leave, please"

Everyone gasped in surprise for Mr. Wayne's courage, demonstrating that the Waynes were a honest family "If you don't leave willingly then security will show you the way out" Alfred walked into the ballroom with two men behind him, members of security. Oh yes, this was a hell of an entrance.

Other guests were looking at each other nervously because they weren't exactly a honest bunch, but Bruce couldn't ask them to leave because they weren't openly members of mafia families. But, the Wayne here was sending a strong message.

As Oswald stood still admiring the view, it would appear the guest of honor had slipped downstairs with the rest of them. There was a small crowd forming, and the Penguin carefully walked closer affecting interest with the umbrella in one hand, and the drink in the other. He and Mr. Wayne had some interaction before, if only though brief and unfortunate.

He smiled sadly at Falcone and Maroni as they looked shocked at Mr. Wayne bringing up their names. He shook his head almost pityingly at them, as if in commiseration. But it was not so, in fact, the Penguin was quite enjoying their humiliation. He sipped some more of the drink as the two men stood bewildered, unsure of what to do.

Powerful men they may be, but Bruce Wayne was equally powerful in this city as well, and his name commanded respect. He was sure of it, and their sheepish looks as they were led out by security only confirmed it. Like Penguin, they tried to look like upstanding citizens, but unlike him, they would never be as successful as he was.

As they were led out, there immediately followed a titter of gossip and shock throughout the hall. This would no doubt the the subject of much conversation over the next few days. Oswald shook his head, affecting disbelief at it all. He played the part of the shocked and construed citizen equally as well as he could be a cold blooded killer when required.

"Oh my," he said as he walked towards the orchestra stage. "Oh my....who could have guessed that two such characters could have infiltrated such a decent gathering...he affected shock again, shaking his head as he walked towards the orchestra section again. Oh no, that simply wouldn't do, would it now? He thought.

Bruce couldn't help but smile when he saw Maroni and Falcone being escorted to the exit. Then he looked at the crowd without saying anything for a little more than it was necessary, the crowd felt his eyes on them and some of the guests looked away. Good. That was the effect Bruce had tried to achieve. Making the dishonest feel unwelcome in Wayne Manor.

However, there was one guest who didn't look away and actually spoke to Bruce. Mr. Wayne politely smiled to Oswald and then rose his champagne glass towards the orchestra "Enjoy your stay" he said to the guests and the music came back. The guests started dancing again, but most of them were still gossiping.

"Deep breaths, Bruce, deep breaths" Bruce thought while stepping down the stage and walking towards Oswald. Of course Bruce didn't actually take deep breaths "Don't punch him in the face...again" these were just supportive thoughts to allow him to be a nice and polite host. It was really difficult to not punch Oswald though, Bruce could feel the itch.

Bruce moved up his hand, but for a handshake. Just looking at Oswald made Bruce remember about Sarah. Her death. The other two friends hadn't been talking to Bruce ever since, he couldn't blame them. To be fair, it wasn't Oswald's fault either, he had saved Batman's life, although he did that because Batman was Penguin's life insurance. However, Bruce thought that Oswald was even worse scum than the two mafia bosses he had just thrown out. The Penguin was more powerful than Maroni and Falcone too since the former leader had died.

Bruce kept the bullet Sarah had shot him with in the Batcave, the bullet that had got stuck in the cape, after checking that it was harmless of course. Bruce made sure to not tighten his grip around Oswald's hand too much, even though Bruce really wanted to hurt him.

Instead of following his instinct, the instinct that was telling Bruce to just punch Oswald in the face until he passed out, Mr. Wayne was smiling charmingly. However, he wanted to make Oswald feel uncomfortable at least. The music had just changed into a lento and the guests were expecting Bruce to dance with someone. Guess who?

Bruce couldn't let this opportunity pass, he didn't want the Penguin to feel comfortable in Wayne manor. Let's embarrass him like Oswald had embarrassed Bruce and Sarah at the Iceberg Lounge. Bruce gave the champagne glass to a waitress nearby and then reached his hand out towards Oswald "May I have this dance?" he asked Oswald. Yep. They could talk while dancing after all and no one would be able to hear them.

The guests in the ballroom looked at Oswald and Bruce, surprised expressions on their faces. Not that this was the first time Bruce had asked a man to dance since that charity event about lgbt rights. But still. The women in the ballroom had hoped that one of them was gonna be Cinderella instead.

There was the possibility that Oswald just said no, but that wouldn't send the right message of peace. Alfred walked beside Bruce ready to take Oswald's umbrella if necessary, dancing with an umbrella hanging down the arm wasn't exactly ideal. Bruce kept looking at Oswald, waiting for an answer. Everyone was waiting for an answer really, all eyes were on Oswald.

No fuss regarding Maroni and Falcone being escorted out. Oswald would have shed a tear, but even now it was difficult to hide his smug satisfaction at their exit. Now he would be able to continue at his leisure throughout the evening, without fear of perhaps being entangled in some one else's arguments. No, these were not discreet men, despite their position in the cities underworld.

As Bruce turned to him, Oswald kept on a friendly face, leaning on the umbrella as a prop. Setting the drink down on a nearby server tray, he turned his head only momentarily to watch it being whisked away. Oswald accepted the handshake, smiling in a very friendly manner as he showed his teeth to the other man, utmost sincerity showing.

The request was very odd, and he was caught off guard. If only for a moment did the Penguin's mask slip and a face of surprise slip through. Oswald caught himself momentarily, blinking rapidly to make it appear that he had not lost his composure at all. When he came too, he was smiling again, mouth closed this time as he nodded.

He held out his umbrella and placed it in the arms of what seemed to be Mr Wayne's valet. "Please take this to the coat check please," he said as he turned back to Mr. Wayne. So he was going to play this game then, he thought with a wry smile. Maybe he had underestimated him. Payback for the spotlight not doubt, subtle but very...to the point.

The crowd was watching them, and Oswald took his arm and met Bruce Wayne's as he nodded again. "Yes, you may have this dance..." he said in a voice almost too smooth to not be manufactured, one that was being controlled every second of the way.

As the music stirred, Oswald only smiled. "So Mr. Wayne, my sincerest condolences" he said in a low as he began dancing. "I heard what happened to Sarah, and I grieve. A promising young life cut short....what does this city do to people?" But Bruce had probably already read the papers, the stories that the major newspapers had run.

The stories that The Penguin had made sure were in the news... fully exposing Sarah's mob ties and playing her death off as a hit job. It clearly took all the blame off of him, and placed it at the feet of these mob killers, no doubt about it, he thought as he shook his head. "Who could have guessed, least of all I when I was at your table Mr. Wayne. I regret that I could not guarantee her safety when she needed it most."

Both Alfred and Bruce caught Oswald's expression, the Penguin's mask had slipped away even if just for one second. It was worthy. Bruce was trying to not smirk victorious, but Oswald's tone when he accepted just made Bruce's smirk more evident.

Surely, Cobblepot had understood that this was some kind of payback. Bruce wasn't even paying attention to the other guests, but he was staring at Oswald instead, like if this was some kind of game they were playing...well, it was. One of those mental games or something.

However Alfred was paying attention, it was part of his job to pay attention to the guests after all. The guests were dancing, but all around Oswald and Bruce, leaving some space between the two men and the rest of the crowd. It seemed like Bruce and Oswald were in a ring, ready for a fight.

Actually, it could have been so easy for Bruce to hurt Oswald very badly. They were close each other due to the dance and Bruce was leading, that meant he could have broke Oswald's wrist and back in just two moves. But, no. No. NO. Bruce kept in mind that he had to do the right thing.

Alfred put the umbrella where Oswald had said, he looked at it for a moment "It seems that man always brings an umbrella with him" Alfred thought frowning, it felt like Bruce had taken away Oswald's first defence or something.

In fact, Bruce had wanted Oswald to leave the umbrella behind just to make him more uncomfortable. Bruce wasn't exactly sure what the umbrella was for Oswald, besides a weapon, but making the Penguin leave his precious umbrella behind felt like a little victory, also making him dance felt like another little victory. Alfred was concerned about Oswald's move, though. Maybe he should go back and check on Bruce, yes, Alfred decided to go back in the ballroom.

Bruce became serious listening to Oswald and felt his hand tightening too much around Oswald's hand, tight enough to start hurting. Bruce looked at their hands for a moment and realized what he was doing so he stopped tightening so much. Well, that was enough of an answer to Oswald's words.

However, Bruce couldn't just not say anything so he actually replied. First, he made a polite nod with his head when Oswald expressed his condolences "I've read what the papers wrote about Sarah, I don't always believe what I read...after all they have lied about my family more than once" and that was a fact.

Bruce thought "Gotham has surely changed us both, Penguin" but didn't say anything about what Gotham did to its citizens. It was too personal. It reminded him of his own parents "At least nothing happened to you, Mr. Cobblepot" Bruce replied about Oswald not being able to save Sarah, it was just a rhetorical polite statement that Bruce Wayne had to say of course "I couldn't save her" Bruce thought and became silent for a moment, while his body danced automatically.

It was humiliating, but Oswald knew better then to make a scene in front of everyone. After all, this was Bruce Wayne's event, and anything out of place would be noted almost immediately, he realized. So there was nothing to do really, but grin and bear it. It was only a momentary discomfort after all, and by playing the role of a good sport he would not lose face.

As he continued talking, Bruce squeezed his hand, .just enough for them both to realize that part of the conversation was not welcomed. Well well, it seemed that Bruce Wayne did have the guts after all, that was more then he would have expected out of the playboy. Oswald smiled, showing his teeth although it hurt, not showing any outward pain.

Oswald shook his head, his face the very picture of sympathy and understanding now as he sighed. "Regrettably it is true that some of these newspapers make their living on deceit and fabrications." He shook his head as if outraged by such a thing, as if he could not believe it at all. He could believe it very well however.

He smiled, nodding slightly at Mr. Wayne's remarks about his safety. "I have my security team to thank, they risked their life to ensure that no harm came in these crucial moments," it had really been a bit of an understatement about that, a fact he was well aware of. However, the fact was that she was dead, and that was....not going to change.

He continued the dance, his mind thinking and scheming and coming up with plans as his body moved. He thought that Mr. Wayne was very upset about this, he had given the emotional cues away....and now maybe what it remained was for him to try and coalesce some of these things together, bring it to a head.

"They did ask me for a statement, and I replied as best as I could...that she seemed to be a very promising young woman, just had the unfortunate accident of falling into the wrong crowd, having...the wrong friends." He looked at Bruce, with a smile of false commiseration. "My apologies Mr. Wayne, I got carried away, she didn't deserve it, any of it."

You know, Oswald and Bruce were hating their guts right now, or at least Bruce was really hating Oswald right now. But, the guests all around them just saw two men dancing without saying anything, just looking at each other. They couldn't see the hate in Bruce's eyes, it just seemed that Bruce was liking Oswald instead.

Instead Alfred could see that Bruce was on the edge. The Waynes' heir was supposed to be nice and not violent at all, but he had noticed that it was very difficult for Bruce to be calm and composed. Alfred could see that Bruce was trying very hard to be the charming playboy he was supposed to be, but it seemed that Oswald knew what buttons to push.

Bruce looked down at Oswald's lips when the other man smiled, but Bruce didn't say anything, he didn't reply this time. He just couldn't. Especially about Oswald's comment on Sarah having the wrong friends. But, Bruce could do something else instead.

He controlled his anger this time, he didn't hurt any part of Oswald's body. Bruce's other hand was on Oswald's hip, but he moved it around Oswald's waist so that he could have a firm grip on the other man's body. Bruce had led Oswald against a wall and moved his lips near Oswald's ear "I hope you are ready" the playboy whispered.

Without any other warning, if not for the music's cue, Bruce danced with Oswald making wide turns around the ballroom, like the other guests were doing because it was that part of the dance. Then Bruce stopped in the middle of the ballroom and performed a casquè on Oswald. Some people took pictures.

The music stopped so that the little orchestra could prepare for the next arrangement. There was a wave of applauses and Bruce was applauding at Oswald. The playboy here was all charming smiles, but he was hoping that the final dance move had put Oswald even in more embarrassment.

The two men were watching each other very carefully, Oswald was well aware. Every step of the dance, every word was now calculated. And to any outsider, it may seem like a pleasant dance, when it was actually more of a sparring match. And the Penguin had to admit, Bruce Wayne was no stranger to this apparently...

They said a man reacted more with how he moved then what he said, and Oswald knew this was very true. Body language stood for a lot, whether it be the slightest micro expression giveaway, or something more obvious as a handshake squeeze... or whatever Bruce was doing now. "What do you have for me, Mr. Wayne?" He replied, smiling thinly as his eyes sparkled.

He was prepared for any number of outcomes, but not what Mr. Wayne did next. The music swelled, and Mr. Wayne carried him around the room dancing very broad as he followed what the others were doing. For a second Penguin was wondering in amazement, until he realized what Bruce was doing. He was unable to stop him however when he stopped to do the bow.

The flash of cameras told him that the entire ballroom had seen that, and his cheeks turned red for the slightest second. However, the Penguin could not be perturbed in public, and so he decided to do his own response as Bruce clapped apparently in applause at him. "A most gracious host indeed," Oswald said as he bowed slightly, still holding Bruces hand.

"I have to commend you Mr. Wayne," he said shaking his head and smiling thinly. The barest trace of irony in his voice as he smoothed out his suit jacket. "Your talent in dancing is to be applauded, and you obviously have practiced..." He bowed again theatrically making it clear that he had not gotten the better of him, at least not yet.

Bruce had seen it, that second, Oswald's red cheeks. Ah, that had felt good. However, that feeling was ruined by another one, the feeling that something was wrong. Revenge was sweet, that was why it could lure to take the wrong decisions.

However, Bruce couldn't really help but feel a smirk coming up knowing that the guests were already posting their pictures addressing Oswald as Cinderella. That was how Bruce's first choice for the dance was playfully called, it was a joke that someone had started few charity events back.

Oswald said that Bruce was a most gracious host "I bet" Bruce thought bitterly but with a smile on his face of course. Bruce bowed back at Oswald because etiquette pretended so "Thank you, Mr. Cobblepot, you are a fine dancer yourself" Oswald was holding Bruce's hand, but then Bruce let go of it to let the other man smooth out his suit jacket.

Alfred couldn't help but shake his head. Maybe Bruce was taking this too far, revenge was never the right answer and Bruce was clearly paying Oswald back for what had happened at the Iceberg Lounge. Paying him back with interests. The orchestra was ready to perform, they were just waiting for the applauses, pictures and the talking to end. However, Alfred made a gesture to them and the orchestra started playing.

Bruce frowned when he heard the music knowing that the musicians would have waited. Then he saw Alfred and his disappointed expression and Bruce understood. Looking at Alfred made him feel again that something was wrong. It was time to leave the ballroom.

"It was nice dancing with you" he smiled at the other man "Please, enjoy your stay" Bruce walked away from the dance floor while the guests were starting to dance. Mr. Wayne had still to meet the guests in the garden after all.

If Oswald wanted to talk to Bruce, or whatever reason he was here Bruce wasn't still sure about that, then Oswald would have to try a little harder. Bruce wanted to make Oswald feel unwelcome and not being available was part of it. The guests in the garden started shaking hands with the host and Bruce was all charming smiles and polite conversations.

"Don't mention it," Oswald said with a smile, perfectly innocent and yet unreadable at the same time. He was sure that this was Mr. Wayne's plan all along probably to embarrass him. However, he also knew that he would not be easily caught, even with a well thought out ruse such as this one had been to catch him off guard.

"Ah, you are very welcome," Oswald said as he turned to collect the umbrella from the butler with a small smile. It seemed to him, that he felt much better with this by his side, even as a prop, it made him feel more alive again, ore like the Penguin as he looked around at the people. All still chuckling and laughing, and he had to be a good sport.

Oswald saw that Bruce was already in the garden, and he thought of a scheme in which he should get a better chance to talk with him. As Mr. Wayne was distracted, Oswald was talking to one of the more high profile socialites in Gotham city, she was here to talk about her charity or something, Oswald did not really care, no not at all.

Instead, he was already engaging her in how he could contribute to her cause, helping the poor orphans or something...he was only half listening even as he nattered on. It was half automated at this point. But the point was, she was walking to the garden, where Wayne was greeting people, and that would give him an excuse too.

She was now talking about how she enjoyed charity events like this, she did the charity circuit to get money for her own cause...Oswald was only half listening, he thought as he watched her get in line with Mr. Wayne. Of course Oswald knew that her charity money didn't go to orphans at all, but he didn't care. Wasn't his business how she afforded new furs or diamond necklaces....

But what did matter, at least to him, was when she came to greet Mr. Wayne, he was right next to her. "Oh Mr. Wayne, funny to meet you again like this," Oswald said with a smile after the woman had already shook Bruce's hand and started on a sales pitch about how inspiring his charity was and that led on to what she was supposedly doing for the poor orphans.

"I was just talking to miss Jacobs here," he said almost matter of factly as if continuing a conversation. "Oh she had a brilliant idea, I couldn't believe how generous...I already agreed to sponsor an event at the Iceberg lounge, and she was asking me if I knew you..." He shrugged as if it were not too big a deal. "So I said of course....I wanted to ask if you could sponsor the event as well? The Wayne name could bring a lot of interest."

He didn't care about the charity, whether it was legitimate or not. He was just using this as an excuse, a prop to corner Bruce again. For the Penguin would have this talk, in whatever form Bruce would like.

The orchestra was now playing something less classical but still atmospheric, the music could be heard in the garden too although it was more like a background ambient music here. People were having fun with their drinks and laughs, Bruce was faking to have a good time too. But of course, the Penguin had ruined even the slightest chance of a good time with his presence.

The butler was in the crowd with a tray and Bruce noticed that Alfred gave him a stare. He frowned but then he understood what Alfred meant when he saw Oswald approaching with a woman. Bruce immediately smiled holding out his hand to shake the woman's hand. He nodded to her words without really listening, but then he listened to what Oswald said.

Bruce's heart dropped, he couldn't deal another night like this with that man. But, Oswald was smart because he had cornered Bruce with that charity event propose. Bruce had to agree to do it, he always helped Gotham...no matter what. Mr. Wayne kept smiling "I'm always willing to help Gotham" he nodded and the people around him smiled "Let's go discuss the details...excuse us" Bruce said to Oswald, but the last part was for the other guests who let Bruce go.

Bruce brought Oswald in the bar room. There were mostly men with cigars here and a piano bar, in fact the music from the orchestra didn't reach this room because it was too far away from the ballroom. The few women here seemed just there for show for the men, these women weren't event talking, they just stood beside their partner...Bruce didn't like it and he didn't like the atmosphere in the room that was full of cigar smoke and alcohol, mostly Scotch.

However, the bar room was the best place to talk business so Bruce sat at the counter with Oswald ordering two Scotches "Your offer was quite generous, Mr. Cobblepot, but I think that you should sponsor your own charity event, also..." Bruce took his glass when the barista put it in front of him "...I don't think I could ever come back to your restaurant...not after..." Bruce shook his head and drank some Scotch "...I'll send my donation of course, but you don't need me, the Iceberg Lounge is quite famous so I'm sure that you can raise enough money without my attendance".

What Bruce had just said sounded selfish, he should go there even if Sarah had died in that restaurant. It was for Gotham after all and Bruce was aware of that. He would change his mind eventually, he was just playing his card. Bruce knew that Oswald was here for a reason and he had to find out what the Penguin was planning. Also, stating that Bruce wouldn't ever come back to Oswald's restaurant could be bad publicity for the Iceberg Lounge and Bruce knew it.

Oswald was nothing if not persistent, and so here he was again, still right in front of Mr. Wayne. He had known that one way to get Mr. Wayne's attention was make him an offer he couldn't refuse....and that did not necessarily have to have negative connotations, despite the stereotypes seen in the movies, sometimes it could be something his target desired.

"Excellent... I knew that we could count on you, Mr. Wayne," Oswald said with a smile as he turned to the woman, and she seemed pleased as well. In actuality, he could not care less, but was using her as a prop more or less at this point to try and make himself look good. Plus he had made his proposition just loud enough to be overheard.

Oswald nodded, and followed Bruce to the bar. He noted mentally the surroundings in this section of the residence, it may come in handy someday that was why he always was attentive and observant. As Mr. Wayne ordered the scotches, Oswald leaned against the bar, the picture of attentiveness as he took in a breath.

Oswald cleared his throat, his hand on his chest, his face the picture of sympathy as he affected to suddenly recall. "Of course...I understand, I can not even imagine what you must have gone through..." he took a breath as he affected to compose himself with great effort, his hand shaking just the right amount as he took two sips of scotch and put it down.

"Your presence will be greatly missed at the event," he said with a nod, pretending to look away before looking back. It was a gamble, but he was prepared to play his cards, which had hitherto been played close to his chest. And Falcone and Maroni earlier had been only his opening move in this gambit, even in Mr. Wayne didn't realize it yet.

And now it was time to go straight for it. The heart of the matter, so to speak, as he took another drink, as if to steady himself, but really to give the illusion of having a difficult time processing. "Miss Jacobs....is actually a cousin of Sarah, you see..." he said as he looked up at Bruce. "The charity is set up in her name, at least it was right after ...her death."

He looked up at Mr. Wayne, leaning close as he affected to share some terrible secret, the right amount of worry in his voice. "She told me in private she was afraid you would say no, that the lies in the paper about Sarah would make you not want to come.... at the least if her name can't be cleared, some good may still yet be done in her name."

@Bruce Wayne

Bruce almost wanted, again, to punch Oswald in the face when he faked to be sad about Sarah. Sure, he was faking really well and Bruce wouldn't have noticed that Oswald was acting if Batman hadn't known the truth. But, Batman knew, he had been there, so Bruce also knew of course.

However, he almost punched Oswald in the face. Almost. He didn't though and he also managed to nod. Mh, alcohol was already helping. Bruce tilted his head a little "Of course you can imagine, losing parents is even worse..." he thought while taking another sip of his drink. Oswald and Bruce had lost their parents, but one became a Penguin and the other a Bat "...unless you are the one who killed them of course" Bruce kept thinking, he couldn't know about that because Batman had never found proofs about their deaths.

Bruce parent's death had made him Batman, a better person, but Oswald wasn't a good person. At least, not from Bruce's point of view, maybe few people had actually managed to see Oswald's kind side, if there was even one, but Bruce didn't even want to see it. Batman had already seen enough. The Penguin was enough. Even too much. Being here with Oswald was even more dangerous than patrolling.

It was more dangerous because Bruce didn't really know how he was gonna react. Sure, he was behaving in the right way now, but...he was also human. He had trained his mind to face obstacles, but the Penguin wasn't just any obstacle. Then, it was Oswald's time to surprise Bruce when he talked about Miss Jacobs and the fact that she was Sarah's cousin...was that even true?

Bruce couldn't show weakness "Don't lean backwards" he thought in his Batman tone when Oswald leaned close. So Bruce just kept staying where he was with his drink, letting Oswald come closer. A little bit of silence passed after that, it lasted just the time for Bruce to drink all the Scotch in his glass "I wouldn't come because I'm still mourning for her death" he said after awhile with sadness in his tone.

Bruce had to admit that Oswald knew how to make deals, of course he knew, he was the freaking Penguin "Having this charity event in her name is a good idea, but the location may be...disgraceful...don't' you agree, Mr. Cobblepot?" Bruce rose a brow "After all, Sarah died in your restaurant" even though Oswald knew how to deal, Bruce knew how to bite back.
